Groups gather to stop Plainfield plant
Hartford, Conn. -
Plainfield Renewable Energy plans to build a renewable energy facility in Plainfield that will burn construction and demolition debris.
While the plan sounds beneficial on the surface, several environmental groups say the facility will only cause pollution and health risks for residents.
The environmentalists are calling for the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to reject pending applications filed by Plainfield Renewable Energy.
"It's a broad set of environmental groups that have serious concerns about this plant in Plainfield," said Chris Phelps of Environment Connecticut. "We are asking the Governor to fix statutory loopholes that are allowing this plant to get subsidies and qualify as a clean energy source when it will be emitting thousands of pounds of pollution into the atmosphere every year."
