Board of Finance

Ellen Chalfant

Ellen Chalfant is running for re-election to the Board of Finance because she has the experience and knowledge to create a budget that is fiscally responsible and meets the town’s needs. She wants to continue contributing to the positive financial condition that the current administration has achieved.

She has served Canterbury in many capacities since she moved to town 35 years ago. She has served on the Board of Education, the Building Committee for the Doctor Helen Baldwin School and the Canterbury Elementary School, and the Board of Finance. In addition, she has been our Municipal Agent for the Elderly and our Town Welfare Administrator. She is vice-president and a current member of the Friends of the Library, a member and past president of The Democratic Town Committee and founding member of the Friends of Prudence.

Ellen enjoys gardening and having a full-time job with the summers off.  She currently works as Instructional Assistant at the Sterling Memorial School and has previously taught school and worked at Connecticut College as its Student Volunteer Program Coordinator. Ellen and her husband Bill have three grown children and two grandchildren who all live in Connecticut.

Robert J. Droesch

Bob Droesch has served on the Board of Finance for the past six years and as its chairman since 2007. He says he is running for re-election because he remains totally committed to the Town of Canterbury. During the past four years the Board of Finance has maintained a healthy fund balance while keeping tax increases to zero without cutting town services. Bob is respected by many townspeople for his fairness and ability to moderate town meetings.

The list of Bob’s community involvement is so extensive it is hard to believe he managed to fit in 25 years submarine service in the Navy, 10 years with Analysis & Technology Inc., and 20 years with the USPS. He currently serves on the Board of Finance and he has served on the Planning and Zoning Commission (9 years), the Board of Selectmen (6 years), and the Veterans Memorial Committee (4 years).  He has also been very committed to the Boy Scouts of America, serving as the Canterbury Cub Scoutmaster for 13 years, and on the Nipmuck District Board for 12 years.  He is a member of the Canterbury Volunteer Fire Company as a member of the Fire Police unit.  He was elected in October of 2010 to serve as the President and CEO of the CVFD.

Throughout his 40-year residency in Canterbury, Bob has continually strived to make Canterbury a better community in which to raise a family and make this area of Connecticut a desirable location to live.  He and wife Gretchen enjoy traveling and have raised three sons here in town.
